President of Alexandria University Attends Inauguration of 20th Conference of International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE 2025) at Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, witnessed the opening ceremony of the 20th Conference of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE) 2025 on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
The conference is held in cooperation between Alexandria University, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE). The four-day conference will be held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina; Engineer Ahmed Attia, Governor of Qalyubeya, Dr. Mark Gillam, President of IASTE, Dr. Walid Abdelazim, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University, Dr. Wael El-Meghlani, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Mohamed Hanafi, the local conference chairman, Dr. Ziad El-Sayyad, Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and member of the conference organizing committee, Mr. Ibrahim Abdelmeguid, the Alexandrian writer and author of the Alexandria Trilogy, and a group of representatives from the Ministries of Environment, Housing, Tourism and Antiquities, and Culture, as well as researchers from around the world.
In his speech, Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa welcomed the conference guests, emphasizing that the ancient city of Alexandria, a city of science, culture, and civilization, is the ideal venue for the 20th International Conference of the International Organization for the Study of Traditional Environments. This conference will discuss traditional environments and the interrelationship between society and urbanization, as evidenced by the city's heritage and historical buildings, which tell stories of the city's greatness and antiquity, stretching back over time. Dr. Konsowa expressed his pride that Alexandria University is participating in this conference, noting that the conference began in 1989 and discusses a number of diverse issues related to the relationship between society and urbanization. He also highlighted the role of Alexandria University in developing the city in cooperation with the Alexandria Governorate through projects such as rainwater management, coastal protection, heritage preservation, and consulting for the industrial sector. Dr. Konsowa invited researchers from all around the world to participate in the scientific activities and dialogues taking place at the conference, especially since the conference is attended by a select group of researchers from diverse backgrounds from around the world.
Dr. Ahmed Zayed emphasized that the conference is a distinguished academic and cultural platform that brings together researchers and practitioners from around the world to discuss the interaction between local traditions and global identities in architectural, urban, and social contexts. He noted that the conference will discuss more than 145 research papers and it will include more than 30 sessions and keynote lectures by international experts. The conference will also include excursions in Alexandria and cultural events that highlight the city's heritage and diversity.
Dr. Walid Abdelazim gave a presentation on the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University, its origins, programs, laboratories, and departments, as well as the joint international agreements the faculty has concluded with similar international colleges. He also reviewed the projects the faculty is implementing in cooperation with the Alexandria Governorate.
Dr. Mark Gillam expressed his happiness to be in Alexandria, a city steeped in ancient heritage. Dr. Gillam praised the scope of successful projects in Alexandria and emphasized the need to increase sidewalk areas to facilitate greater communication between people.
Workshop on "European Union Funding and Support for Scientific Research and Innovation"
Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, attended yesterday, a workshop organized by Alexandria University in cooperation with the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and the Horizon Egypt Program on "European Union Funding and Support for Scientific Research and Innovation." The workshop aimed to introduce European Union-funded projects and how researchers at Alexandria University can benefit from them, as well as how to apply for these projects, in addition to introducing grants provided by the European Union.
The workshop was held in the conference hall of the Faculty of Engineering. It was attended by Dr. Roshdi Zahran, former President of Alexandria University and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alexandria International University, Dr. Hisham Saeed, Vice President of Alexandria University for Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Walid Abdelazim, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Engineer Sherif Haddara, former Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Yasser Refaat, former Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry, Chief Commissioner of the Horizon Europe Program and Vice President of the Prima Program at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Essam Wahba, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Wael El-Meghlani, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Education and Student Affairs, Dr. Dina El-Gayar, Director of the Project Management Unit at Alexandria University, Dr. Alaa Abdelbary, Vice President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Dr. Amr Radwan, Supervisor of Research and Innovation Support at the Academy of Scientific Research and Coordinator of the "Horizons Europe" Program, Ms. Zeinab El-Sadr, National Representative for the Horizon Europe & Erasmus Program at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and a number of deans and vice deans of faculties, faculty members, researchers, and students.
In his speech, Dr. Konsowa emphasized that Alexandria University strongly supports all scientific seminars and meetings aimed at linking scientific research with industry to support the knowledge-based economy. He noted that Alexandria University, through its Technology Park, targets innovative ideas and applied scientific research by researchers capable of addressing the challenges facing the industrial sector and Egyptian society. He explained that these innovative projects will receive competitive funding, provided that these research ideas include solutions to industrial and societal problems. He also explained that the University provides a supportive and stimulating environment for researchers and young entrepreneurs, encouraging them to establish start-up companies, thus contributing to the growth of the national knowledge-based economy.
Dr. Roshdi Zahran emphasized that the workshop hosts creative minds from faculty members, researchers, graduate students, and representatives of academic and research institutions who share a passion for knowledge, research, and innovation. He emphasized that the workshop's sessions aim to highlight available funding mechanisms, exchange expertise on formulating successful research proposals, and build collaborative networks between local and international institutions. He noted that the workshop is a vital step toward enhancing cooperation between academia and industry. He emphasized that the goal of the Technology Park at Alexandria University is to transform Alexandria into a regional innovation centre by supporting knowledge transfer, empowering startups and entrepreneurs, and focusing on strategic sectors of interest to the Egyptian tour, such as information technology, digital transformation, energy, water management, food security, and biotechnology, in line with Egypt's Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research to Achieve Sustainable Development.
Dr. Walid Abdelazim emphasized that this workshop is an exceptional opportunity for researchers in various scientific fields to learn about EU-funded projects and how to benefit from them, especially given the presence of representatives from these projects, who will present all the details for applying for these projects. He also explored ways to collaborate and build partnerships between researchers. He praised the role of Alexandria University, headed by Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, in advancing scientific research, supporting researchers, and providing them with all the information they can benefit from to advance the university's scientific research system. He expressed his hope that the symposium would produce recommendations that would contribute to serving Egyptian society.
Dr. Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry pointed to the role of Alexandria University in the "European Horizons" program as a partner country in this agreement, which was initialed in April 2025. He emphasized that this program is an exceptional opportunity for researchers at Egyptian universities and research centres to obtain funding for their innovative research ideas. He also discussed the Prima initiative, which provides the necessary funding for competitive projects in the fields of water, food, agriculture, and energy, with joint funding from European Union countries and countries of the Southern Mediterranean.
Dr. Dina El-Gayar emphasized that this workshop sheds light on grants and projects offered by the European Union, how to benefit from them, and the practical steps that can be taken to accept them. It also highlights the successful experiences of some grant recipients and builds bridges between EU projects and university researchers to develop their skills. She emphasized that the workshop will include an open discussion to provide an opportunity for researchers and entrepreneurs to ask questions and help participants understand the funding mechanisms and available partnerships, and how to maximize the opportunities offered by the program to support their research and innovative projects.
The workshop included a lecture on introducing the European Union's Erasmus and Horizon program, presented by Dr. Amr Radwan and Ms. Zeinab El-Sadr. They reviewed the program's objectives, how to benefit from external grants provided by the European Union, and they also introduced the grants provided by the Academy of Scientific Research to link medical sciences with industry and strengthen ties between Egypt and the European Union.
Graduate Studies and Research Council Discusses Opening Applications for Projects Funded by Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF)
Dr. Hisham Saeed, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research at Alexandria University, emphasized the need to encourage faculty researchers to apply for projects funded by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF). This program is part of the Egyptian-Chinese cooperation program, known as the China-Egypt Research Fund (Eighth Call). These projects are funded by EGP 3 million per project in the fields of water, food and agriculture, health, information and communications technology, advanced industries, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence. The program also includes the Egyptian-Chinese Joint Research Laboratories Establishment Program (First Call), with funding of up to EGP 20 million from the Egyptian side and 3 million yuan from the Chinese side for projects including waste management and recycling, green energy, low-carbon technology, smart agriculture, artificial intelligence, and advanced robotics. The deadline for applications for these projects is June 23, 2025.
- The Council emphasized the importance of exercising extreme caution when publishing internationally, during its review of the database of articles published in international journals.
- The Council discussed University Council Resolution No. (1) of 2022 regarding passing the language exam and other types of exams approved by the Council as a requirement for registering research topics and plans to obtain a degree.
- The Council approved the academic cooperation agreement between Alexandria University (Faculty of Engineering) and Missouri University of Science and Technology in the United States of America.
- The Council approved the establishment of a professional master's degree in artificial intelligence in the Information Technology Department of the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research, a special program
Alexandria National University Board of Trustees Holds Its Second Meeting at Alexandria University
The second meeting of the Board of Trustees of Alexandria National University was held yesterday, Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in the presence of Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University and Acting President of Alexandria National University, Dr. Mohamed Nasr El-Din Demir, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alexandria National University and former President of Alexandria University, and members of the Board of Trustees.
During the meeting, the Board reviewed the duties and responsibilities of the Board of Trustees, the formation of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, and the definition of its duties and responsibilities. The Board also reviewed the follow-up report on the activities of the National University.
- The Board approved the inclusion of Dr. Roshdi Zahran, former President of Alexandria University and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of El Alamein International University, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Alexandria National University.
- The Board also approved the appointment of Dr. Yosry Taha, Dean of Registration and Admissions at Alexandria Private University, as Secretary of the Board.
- The Board approved the general bylaws of Alexandria National University.
- The Council approved the university's budgets for the previous fiscal years (2022/2023 and 2023/2024).
- The Council discussed the proposed number of students to be enrolled in the various programs at Alexandria National University and the university's scholarship policy for the next academic year 2025/2026 .
- Dr. Mohamed Nasr, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, gave a presentation on the construction phases of Alexandria National University, including classrooms, lecture halls, specialized laboratories, auditoriums, administrative offices, and an electronic research library. He explained that the second phase of the facilities is scheduled to be completed in August 2025, bringing the university's campus and facilities' capacity to 12,000 students.
- Dr. Sameh Nakhla, Director of the Academic Governance Centre at Alexandria National University, gave a presentation on the centre’s objectives in human resources capacity building, and managing institutional performance through the committees of teaching and learning, measurement and evaluation, and academic performance development.
- The Council offered its condolences to the family of Engineer Abed Ezz El Regal, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, former Chairman of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, and member of the Board of Trustees of Alexandria National University, who passed away after a distinguished career in Egypt's industrial and energy sectors, praying to God Almighty to bestow His mercy upon him and to grant him a place in His spacious heavens. Mr. Ezz El Regal played a tangible role in facilitating communication between the university and the industrial sector to serve and develop the industry and contributed to numerous successes and achievements.
- Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, emphasized the role of national universities, which emerged from public universities, in meeting labour market needs, expanding new programs, providing greater opportunities for interdisciplinary programs, and keeping pace with the development of education programs at the international level, based on international partnerships in cooperation with prestigious international universities
Dr. Konsowa explained that Alexandria National University, despite its recent establishment, has three international agreements with Virginia Tech in the US, the University of Essex in the UK, and soon with the University of East London in the UK. He also emphasized that an integrated system exists to serve students at Alexandria University and Alexandria National University, allowing them to benefit from the educational and non-educational facilities and services currently being established at the two universities, in addition to international branches in Egypt and abroad. Some of these facilities will be inaugurated at the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year, including the specialized laboratories of the Faculty of Dentistry and the specialized electronic laboratories complex building. Other facilities will be inaugurated the following academic year, such as the large conference hall and its annexes, the central playground area and its services, the entertainment area, and the open-air theatre
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Nasr El-Din Demir expressed his thanks and appreciation to the administration of Alexandria University and Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, for the completion of this great edifice, which emerged from the prestigious Alexandria University, and for the unlimited support and achievements made during the past period at Alexandria National University. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and integration between public and national universities and the provision of modern academic programs that keep pace with the needs of future jobs
